Pr. f 37,50. In 1610 Hugo Grotius published his De Anfiquilafe Reipublicae Bafavicae, which was printed in a Latin and a Dutch version. The Dutch version, which is an authorized translation of the Latin text, has recently been edited by G.c. Molewijk (De oudheid van de Balaafse nIl HollandsI' Repllbliek. Weesp 1988). Until now the Latin text has not been available in a modern scholarly edition. This edition by a 'sodalicium' of students of classical languages at Leiden Uni- versity is therefore highly welcome. Grotius wrote this treatise - as he told his friend Isaac Casaubonus in a let- ter - "in commendationem reipublicae nostrae" and in all probability in con- nection with his function of official historiographer of the States of Holland.
