La Esperanza, 2, 38206 La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain 2) Department of Zoology, Scottish Crop Research Institute, Invergowrie, Dundee DD2 5DA, Scotland The high copy fragments generated by the digestion of total DNA using four endonucleases (BamHI, EcoRI, EcoRV and HindIII) were analysed in 24 populations of potato cyst nematodes (PCN) from Tenerife (Canary Islands) and compared with nine control populations representing the virulence spectrum found in Europe. Large differences were found between species but no appreciable variation was observed within the nine Canarian and five control populations of Globodera rostochiensis. Within the G. pallida group two populations, the British pathotype Pal population and a Pa3 population from Luffness (Scotland), each had distinct phenotypes whereas the others including the 15 Canarian and four British control populations, could not be distin- guished from the Pa3 control population from Lindley.
