Seasonal Variation in the Food of a Molluscivorous Cichlid Haplochromis Sauvagei Pfeffer 1896

Seasonal Variation in the Food of a Molluscivorous Cichlid Haplochromis Sauvagei Pfeffer 1896 SEASONAL VARIATION IN THE FOOD OF A MOLLUSCIVOROUS CICHLID HAPLOCHROMIS SAUVAGEI PFEFFER 1896 by EGID F. B. KATUNZI (Mwanza Fisheries Research Centre, P. O. Box 475, Mwanza, Tanzania) INTRODUCTION Most investigations of the food of haplochromine cichlids have been qualitative. Various food items were enumerated without further details of the feeding strategies, seasonal fluctuations or quantitative assessment of the relative importance of the food types in the gut (GREENWOOD, 1981). For a proper understanding of feeding specialisations and resource partitioning, the latter data are of crucial importance. Currently there are controversies about the actual occur- rence of specialists and opportunistic feeders among the cichlids (LIEM, 1980; LEWIS, 1981; VAN OIJEN, 1982; WITTE, in press ; BAREL, in press). This paper deals with the feeding strategy of Haplochromis sauvagei, a species that according to GREENWOOD (1957)*) feeds mainly on gastropods. Fluctuations in the frequency of prey occurrence in the stomach and the relationship between predator and prey, together with the prey densities in the habitat are discussed.
