Early Amphibian Development: a Paradigm for Morphogenesis EARLY AMPHIBIAN DEVELOPMENT: A PARADIGM FOR MORPHOGENESIS edited by J. FABER (Symposium* held at the Hubrecht Laboratory, International Embryological Institute, Utrecht, The Netherlands) OPENING ADDRESS This Symposium is meant to honour the scientific achievements of Professor Pieter D. Nieuwkoop, who played such an eminent role in the post-war history of the Hubrecht Laboratory and is very largely responsible for its present shape and status. We are happy to have with us today so many of his friends and colleagues, both older and younger and coming from many different countries. I am sure this delights him because he has always valued friendships very highly. In fact with him, being a scientific colleague has almost always been tantamount to being a friend as well. I think I know him well enough to say that warm human relationships are one of the chief concerns of his life. We have asked the four distinguished speakers of today to organize their contributions in such a way as to bring out Nieuwkoop's achieve- ments as a background to their own work and ideas. Thus, in a way the four topics reflect Nieuwkoop's scientific career, which spans more than 35 years.
