Behavioural Differences Between Two Strains and the Hybrids of the Wasp Pseudeucoila Bochei Weld (Hym.: Cynipidae), a Parasite of Drosophila Melanogaster

Behavioural Differences Between Two Strains and the Hybrids of the Wasp Pseudeucoila Bochei Weld... BEHAVIOURAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TWO STRAINS AND THE HYBRIDS OF THE WASP PSEUDEUCOILA BOCHEI WELD (HYM.: CYNI- PIDAE), A PARASITE OF DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER by F. A. VEERKAMP (Department of Genetics, Zoological Laboratory, University of Leiden, The Netherlands) SUMMARY Two strains of the cynipid wasp Pseudeucoila bochei, Leiden and Storrs, parasites of larvae of Drosophila melanogaster, were compared in mating and parasitization experiments. The Storrs females copulated for 120-130 sec. after proper courtship, whereas duration of copulation was about 75 sec. in the Leiden females. Hybrid females showed an intermediate duration of copulation of 90-95 sec. Storrs females produced a higher proportion of females when they were mated to Storrs males. When mated to Leiden males, only a few females were produced, although the presence of sperm cells could be demonstrated in the female's seminal vesicle. In the parasitization experiments with the Leiden females a higher host mortality was found in the larval and in the pupal phase. The Leiden females also produced less offspring than the Storrs and the hybrid females; more flies eclosed in the Leiden series than in the other series. In the parasitization experiments the reproductive behaviour of the hybrid females was intermediate at the start http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Netherlands Journal of Zoology (in 2003 continued as Animal Biology) Brill

Abstract

BEHAVIOURAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TWO STRAINS AND THE HYBRIDS OF THE WASP PSEUDEUCOILA BOCHEI WELD (HYM.: CYNI- PIDAE), A PARASITE OF DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER by F. A.
