VAN DER VELDE (Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology, Catholic University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands) INTRODUCTION When I squashed specimens of the marine triclad Uteriporus vulgaris Bergendal, 1890*, I discovered some holotrichous ciliates obviously belonging to the astome family Haptophryidae. The species of this family are endoparasites in the digestive tract of amphibians, terrestrial molluscs and triclad flatworms. They are characterized by a long con- tractile vacuole, a distinct headlike anterior end with a sucker (thigmo- tactic organ), an oval to elongate macronucleus, the absence of a mouth, and, unequal binary fission with or without chain-formation (CORLISS et al., 1965). The animals had hooks on the sucker, which are characteristic of the subfamily Lachmanellinae. As there were only two hooks of unequal size, I ascribed my specimens to the genus Steinella. Up to now only one species has been described in this genus, viz., Steinella uncinata (SCHULTZE, 1851). The publication of SIKORA (1963) gives much in- formation on this species.
