Abstract

111 of the former period had to be reconstructed after extracts, made by contem- poraries or editors in various countries. So the more easy part was published in 1984, the difficult one in 1988. Now we have a very exact transcription and a careful commentary. There are many personal remarks of Giles, so preaching about the beards of Aaron and of pope Julius II in 1511 (17, nr. 821), or the char- ming story about young Charles V ('Caesar Carlinus') in the same year, who presented the general a white horse and asked him to give a sermon on behalf of queen Germaine, his step-grandmother-and the general preached about the psalm 'The queen stands at your right hand' (17, nr. 812). For the ecclesiastical history more important is what the general noted in January 1511 about the representatives of the seven German convents who did not want to take part in the unification with the Saxonian province. Here-just as in other cases-father De Meijer gives in his annotation the results of modern research. Both volumes give an excellent and detailed picture of the activities of the Austin Friars, who worked on reformation of organisation and obedience but wanted
