An Unpublished Erasmian Apologia in the Royal Library of Copenhagen

An Unpublished Erasmian Apologia in the Royal Library of Copenhagen AN UNPUBLISHED ERASMIAN APOLOGIA IN THE ROYAL LIBRARY OF COPENHAGEN ERIKA RUMMEL Toronto The Royal Library of Copenhagen holds a manuscript (Gl. Kgl. Sam- ling 96 fol.) which contains an unpublished apologia in Erasmus' hand. The tract, entitled Manifesta mendacia, occupies folios 207 recto to 214 recto, with 212 verso left blank. The manuscript is described by C. Reedijk in "Three Erasmus Autographs in the Royal Library at Copenhagen, " Studia Bibliographica in Honorem Herman De la Fontaine Verwey (Amsterdam, 1966), pp. 327-49. The leaves containing the Manifesta mendacia are in fairly sound condi- tion. A few words are illegible due to damp stains, and folio 213 has the lower right hand corner torn off, which creates lacunae in the last five lines of the text on that folio. Erasmus' handwriting, however, poses a challenge to the reader. The tract is written in a hurried hand that often degenerates into a scrawl and is difficult to decipher. Individual paragraphs in the text are numbered on folios 207 verso to 213 recto, but errors in numbering betray the writer's haste: Erasmus jumps from paragraph '35' to '46' and from '49' to '60' (see below pp. 221-223).
