Abstract

97 Christian writer in this period was able to make (p. 125). The reader wonders how this can be seriously maintained after Doignon's great book on Hilary in which his dependence on Cicero and Quintilian is made abundantly clear. Colish dismisses Doignon's conclusions by merely claiming that he consistently overinterpreted Hilary's Stoicism. She fails to substantiate this claim by largely ignoring Stoic elements in Hilary or by summarily declaring these to be marginal. The concept of the natural law which Colish detects only in Tract. super Ps. 118 is the underlying concept of the important Introduction to his De Trinitate. This unsatisfactory treat- ment makes the reader doubt the reliability of the brief expositions given to some other authors. Perhaps the title of the book promises too much. This criticism and these reservations do not prevent the reviewer from expressing his gratitude for a learned and most useful book on a great subject. E. P.
