De 'stad' van Gen. 11, 4 wordt in de bijbel anders gewaardeerd dan 'de heilige stad' van Apoc. 21, 2. Tussen dat eerste en dit laatste bijbelboek ligt een wereld van verschil die met de adiectieven agrarisch/ruraal en burgerlijk/verstedelijkt al te simplistisch wordt aangeduid. Toch heeft juist deze dichotomie, feitelijk èn op de achtergrond, een grote rol gespeeld in de geschiedenis van Kerk en christendom. Ieder die zich ooit met de Oude Kerk heeft bezig gehouden, weet dat het jonge christendom begint in de steden en pas zeer langzaam doordringt in de pagus, waar het paganisme veel taaier en vasthoudender blijkt dan in de Griekse polis of in de Latijnse civitas. En omgekeerd weet eenieder die zich met de Jongste Kerk bezig houdt, dat de 'moderne' saecularisatiegolf eerder vat kreeg op de moderne cosmopoliet dan op de christen die in de schaduw van de vertrouwde dorpskerk leeft.
