Van... 241 modern London confirms the multi-faceted nature of individual identity and self fashioning, concluding that the various dimensions of Welshness ensured that immigrants were often well integrated into London society, and escaped xenophobic outbursts endured by other groups. The final chapter, Robert Shoemaker's study of London gender relations, suggests that even where there were clearly defined gender roles and spheres of influence, the demands of daily life ensured that such theoretical limitations on the activities of men and women were often ignored in practice. This is a wide-ranging and ambitious project. The thematic exploration of individual self-fashioning and the formation of identities holds together what at times appears to be a rather disparate collection of essays, with a broad chrono- logical sweep and equally diverse subject matter. However the overall effect is quite persuasive, giving the reader a clear sense of the extent to which word and image, both religious and political, could be interpreted independently by individuals and mediated by local concerns.
