Abstract

281 In postmodernism , Murphy has taken on an enormously complex and intricate subject, summarized its main tenets, introduced readers to critiques and objections to it, and placed his discussion in a meaningful context for practicing social scientists. Notes follow each chapter and a select bibliography appears at the end of the text, so the reader always knows the context in which the author's discussion is rooted. True, Murphy never articulates clearly the boundaries of postmodernism: when and where it crystalized as a movement, and who should be correctly identified as postmodernist thinkers. Consequently, some may find Lyotard, Baudrillard. Deleuze, Barthes, Der- rida, de Man, Foucault, Gauttari, Scholes, Lacan, Said, and Kristeva to be strange bedfellows. But the reader with an interest in this topic and an open mind can learn a great deal from this book. Moreover, one can find specific applications for a set of ideas which may otherwise seem esoteric and of interest only to literary and art critics.
