The book under review is a first study of the Bodhasāra of Narahari dated by the author to the eighteenth century. The work is a Vedāntic encyclopædia, which aims at guiding the reader to liberation in life, while at the same time summarizing religious background knowledge, from the varieties of Yoga to details of daily practice. Cover touches upon the following topics in her study: translation, literary style, philosophic devices, moral issues, liberation, and a comparison of the Bodhasāra with other works on liberation ( mokṣa ). There are several appendices, a detailed list of chapters of the Bodhasāra as well as extensive information about the manuscripts and their colophons. An English translation of the Bodhasāra has also been recently published. 1 The author situates her work in the context of the project Sanskrit Knowledge Systems on the Eve of Colonialism and attempts to understand the place of the text within Sanskrit literature from that angle.
