Jeffers 1976 concentrates on phonological restructuring which is a product o f phonemic innovation. He traces these innovations in the so-called Bihari 1 languages in comparison with the Midland languages (Western and Eastern Hindi) and the Eastern languages (Bengali, Assamese, Oriya). The author thus focusses his attention on the historical processes leading to innovations in, and restructuring of, the phonological systems o f the languages concerned. As to the phonological systems (and a few other features) underlying Jeffers' most stimulating discussion, some modifications are possible which I offer in this paper. These modifications will, to a certain extent, rather corroborate Jeffers' position that there is a sort o f Midland-Bihari-Eastern continuum (hinted
