KASHIKAR Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit, Poona University Caland has made a welcome contribution to the understanding of the Apastamba Srautasfttra ( = .~pSS) by publishing his Srautasfttra des Apastamba (Books 1-7, G6ttingen and Leipzig, 1921; Books 8-15, Amsterdam, 1924; and Books 16-24 and 31, Amsterdam, 1928). His translation was based on Garbe's edition (Vols. I-III Calcutta, 1882, 1885, and 1902) which was furnished with Rudradatta's commentary on Pra~nas I-XV. Caland must have utilised Rudradatta's commentary on Pra~nas I-XV while translating that portion of the Sfitra, even though we do not find any direct statement to that effect in his Prefaces to Parts i and II. That he must have done so is quite evident from his remarks in the "Vorwort" to Part III: "Fiir die BiJcher XVI bis XXIV fehlt uns die Hilfe eines Kommentars. Dadurch wird natiJflich die Arbeit des ~ b e r - setzers sehr erschwert, da er meistens nur auf die verwandten Texte ange- wiesen ist, die freilich der beste K o m m e n t a r sind." He has,
