Book Reviews REVIEWS Ludwik Sternbach, The Hitopadeia and its sources (= American Oriental Series, vol. 44). New Haven, Connecticut, 1960. XIV + 110 pp. This book presents the results of a detailed comparison of the Hitopadeia with various recensions of the Paficatantra and many other Sanskrit works of different genres. The correlation of the Hitopadeia with these texts is shown in six tables, viz. (I) correlation between the Hitopadeia stanzas and the stanzas of various versions and editions of the Paficatantra; (II) relation between the Hitopadesa tales and the Pafica- tantra tales according to various versions and editions; (Ill) correlation between the Hitopadeia stanzas and Nitisästras; (IV) correlation between the Hitopadeia stanzas and various versions and editions of CälJ.akya's aphorisms; (V) correlation between the Hitopadesa stanzas and dharmasästras; (VI) correlation between the Hitopadeia stanzas and the epics, puräl)as, kathä, kävya etc. In an annex the correspondence of the stanzas of the Hitopadeia in eight different editions is shown. These tables serve as a basis for the author's further investigations.
