STAAL Amsterdam INTRODUCTION I f J o h n Braine's b o o k Room at the top were translated into Sanskrit, regardless o f the question whether it would attract any readers, its title would consist o f one single n o u n : it could be literally translated as dirog.rham (from diras " t o p " and g.rham "house, r o o m " ) , kut.dgdra (from kfqa "peak", agdra "house"), or rendered m o r e freely as candraddld or candraprdsdda.h (from candra.h " m o o n " , ddld "hut", prdsdda.h " u p p e r storey"). 1 T h e aim o f this study is to describe some o f the processes which underly the f o r m a t i o n o f such c o m p o u n d nouns.
