Up-to-date information on the fine structure and nature of root surface mucilages is presented. We also review the biological functions of mucilage with respect to plant, soil and microflora. In particular, the involvement of mucilage in root-microorganism interaction is discussed in the light of the growing volume of data from immunological, physiological and biochemical studies.
