MULTIPLE FORMS OF GLUTAMINE SYNTHETASE IN THE PLANT FRACTION OF PHASEOLUS ROOT NODULES Activity of glutamine synthetase in the plant fraction of Phaseolus root nodules was approximately 14-fold higher than in the roots, when synthetase activities (per g fresh wt) were compared. Chromatography of the plant nodule enzyme on DEAE-Sephacel revealed the presence of three forms of the enzyme. These forms could also be separated by starch gel electrophoresis but not by gel filtration, suggesting that the three forms in the nodule differ in charge but not in molecular weight. Evidence is presented showing that the thud form of glutamine synthetase in the nodule is identical to the single form of the enzyme found in roots.
