THE TYPE OF MORETTIA UBACHII PAU

THE TYPE OF MORETTIA UBACHII PAU ISRAEL JOURNAL OF BOTANY, Vol. 30, 1981, p. 211 NOTE THE TYPE OF MORETTIA UBACH/1 PAU B. VALDES Departamento de Botdnica, Facultad de Biologia, Sevilla, Spain ABSTRACT Morettia ubachii Pau has been typified and identified with M. canescens Boiss. In a recent study of the genus Morettia DC. (Cruciferae ), Stork and Wuest (1980: 259) indicated that they had not succeeded in locating the type of M. ubachii described by Pau (1913) from material collected by B. Ubach in Djebel-Serval, Arabia. From the description alone these authors considered that M. ubachii should be referred to M. parviflora Boiss., since it was described by Pau (loc. cit.) as "Prostrata ... , foliis integris ... subpetiolatis, ... siliquis ... arcuatis, cylindricis .... " In the herbarium of the Real Jardin Botanico, Madrid, there is a sheet from Pau's herbarium (MA 49720) with the following label: "Morettia ubachi Pau, sp. nov. Plantas de Siria. Djebel-Serval, 15 .IV.l91 0. Leg. B. Ubach (Middede)." In his descrip tion, Pau (loc. cit.) cited "Serval (Siria). Leg. R.P. Ubach, 15.1V.l910", which indi cates that this sheet is clearly the type material upon which M. ubachii was based. The sheet consists of three fragments, the largest of which is chosen as lectotype of a somewhat woody, white-tomentose Morettia with appressed stellate hairs and leaves up to 13 X 4 mm, sessile to shortly petiolate, with an entire margin. The flowers are in short, dense racemes, and each has a short pedicel (circa I mm) and deciduous sepals of 3.5-4.0 mm. The fruits are 11-12 X 1.5 mm and cylindrical, straight to somewhat curved (the term "arcuatis" used by Pau (loc. cit.) is rather exaggerated). The material clearly fits with M. canescens Boiss., and is very similar to the plants collected on 7.111.1940 by Zohary in southern Sinai, Oasis of Wadi Feiran (MA 194667), a duplicate of which was cited by Stork and Wuest (1980: 265) under M. canescens.
