The second part of the book is devoted to water supply and to storage of grains and oil. Water supply is of exceptional interest here, because Gingi is situated in a dry area, which necessitated the use of underground water by elaborate engineering. This was achieved with astonishing skill be ancient engineers, Hindu and Muslim (?). Besides investigating the quantity of water available and its distribution, attention is also drawn to the quality of water excellent to our present times (p. 195, note 209). Four appendices discuss the toponymy of Gingi, the artillery during the French times together with the importance of Gingi under Joseph François Dupleix (1697–1763), and finally the epigraphical material relating to Gingi. The text is illustrated by a large number of instructive plans and photo- graphies. An English summary concludes this book, which, as a major contribution to the study of fortification and water works in India, has set a very high standard for all future investigations into these fields.
