Beijing: Shehui kexue wenxian chubanshe, 2009. 693pp. 98. ISBN 978-7-5097-0751-7 Generally speaking any successful study should meet the following criteria: the questions it raises and then goes onto answer should be of importance to academia; new views expressed should be properly backed up with evidence and expressed in a convincing way; the theory should combine macro and micro perspectives and furthermore the conclusion should be based on well researched historical and scientific evidence. Liang Mancang's newest work, Weijin Nanbeichao Wuli zhidu kaolun, hereafter referred to as Kaolun, is such a study. The main question covered in Kaolun is that of the system of rituals during the Weijin Nan-Bei dynasties (220589). A review of the state-of-the-field shows that there have been studies into rituals of marriage, funerals and others, however there is a lack of an overall study. One of the earliest to approach this problem was Chen Yinque's Sui Tang zhidu yuanyuan lüelungao (Draft brief discussions on the origins of the systems of the Sui and Tang, Beijing: Zhonghua shuju, 1963), nevertheless http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Frontiers of History in China Brill
