INTRODUCTION The original Skand a pur aa _ na (SP), 1 offers a unique opportunity to study the development of a Pur aa _ n a . This is because of the following reasons: 1. A very old version is preserved in manuscripts from Nepal, one of which is dated (810 C.E.). The text is called simply the F Skand a pur aa _ na _ in these manuscripts. 2. We have access to three different recensions. In addition to the recension from Nepal, two recensions that style themselves as the F Ambik aakha _ n _ da _ (A) and the F Rev aakha _ n _ da _ (R) of a F Skand a pur aa _ na _ have survived. They are preserved in manuscripts later than the 17th century. Even though they are called kha _ n _ da s, they transmit fundamentally the same text as the Nepalese recension.
