According to the Brahmanical scholastic tradition, three types of love are distinguished in Sanskrit literature: erotic, emotional, and conjugal. Erotic love (kama  ) denotes the sensual pleasures chiefly of men as detailed in the sex manuals of Kamasastra. Emotional love (srng _ ara  ) belongs to the eight or nine mental states (bhava  ) of the protagonist described in the dramaturgical and poetological treatises of Natyasastra and Alamkarasastra as evoking similar sentiments : : (rasa) in the audience or readership. Conjugal love (rati) is a com- bination of the previous two as occurring between man and woman in a legitimate relationship and delineated in the marriage hand- books of Ratisastra.
